My First Birth Session {Maclean Birth Photographer}

What an absolute amazing experience it was photographing the birth of a new human being. The whole experience goes from lulls of quiet where everyone was alone with their own thoughts to feelings so exquisite you can’t actually feel anything. You are crying and smiling and at the same time feeling blank from shock from what is unfolding before you. I am so happy that in my lifetime I have managed to experience something wonderful apart from going through the process myself.

Bub was in no rush to enter the world. They were 4 days overdue when the at a general Dr’s appointment it turned out that mum was already 4 cms dialated! After some further investigations it turns out the Dr thought it was best to coax bub into the world that day and it was decided that mums waters would be broken later that night.

I drove up to Lismore hospital and arrived at around 7:30pm. Mum was calm and breathing through her early contractions. Checking out Facebook and having small excited chats is how time was filled until the midwife arrived to break her waters. This was at 8:45pm. She mentioned bub would hopefully arrive within 2 hours. I think we were all all thinking no way but bub had its own ideas! Slowly the contractions increased and at 10:47pm bub was welcomed into the world. The thing that sticks in my mind the most was bubs head was out and was crying! I have never heard of this and was in awe at this tiny being having a voice as soon as they could.

Mum and Dad had chosen to not find out what sex bub was so it was great to watch their facial expressions when they realised she was a beautiful baby girl. 7 pounds with 10 little fingers and 10 little toes.

I captured all moments of the birth so of course some are not for public viewing but here are some I can share to help tell the story. I love how gritty and raw these photos are. I usually strive to have no grain in my shots but with this it is so natural I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thank you soooooooo much Don and Abbey for letting me a part of something so private and emotional :)

This is how I found mummy. Calm Mummy breathing through a contraction. Picture taken in the reflection of a window.
